A) The current version (mask revision) of the 68040 DOES NOT
correctly implement the use of the Jump Trace bit.
This means that the Trace Jumps command will cause
spurrious Bus Errors and you will end up in The Debugger.
B) Despite appearances, The Debugger & System 7 VM DO NOT get along !
Connectix has NOT released a System 7 compatable version of Virtual.
I spent a few days trying to fix the problems, and was NOT successful.
The problems that I know about are:
1) You CAN NOT step over or into a Macintosh Trap call at the
assembly language level.
2) I have seen other miscellaneous errors (stack crosses heap)
occur after a task with a .SYM file was run.
3) There is still excessive disk thrashing in some cases.
If you need more than 8 Meg of memory because you are using
MacApp V3, etc, then possible solutions are:
a) Use System 6 and Virtual by Connectix.
b) Remove unnecessary extensions from your System which take up
a lot of space such as DAL, File Sharing, AppleShare, …
and cut down on your RAM cache size, etc.
c) Buy more memory, 4 Meg SIMMs are priced at $125 - $135 (9/9/91)
Some sources that I have purchase memory from are:
Chip Merchant - 800-426-6375 (California)
Peripheral Outlet - 800-332-6581 OR 405-332-6581 (Central Time)
One developer told me that you really DO NOT want to use VM with MacApp.
He said that it took him over 4 hours to do a MABuild on a IIfx
with VM on. After that he ordered another 16 Meg of memory.
Better to hang yourself from a tree and swing in the breeze !!
